SA Navy treads water to punch above its weight

SAS Amatola (F145)Throngs of smiling crowds lined the quayside of Naval Base Simon’s Town this past weekend, enjoying the annual SA Navy Festival. Behind the scenes, however, the Navy was anxiously treading water, keeping their ships functional and operational.

Presenting the annual State of the Navy briefing, Flag Officer Fleet, Rear Admiral Bravo Mhlana, gave an overview of the various activities undertaken by the Navy during the past year.

As could be expected, Mhlana was positive of what the Navy had achieved on a limited budget, whilst outlining a few of the challenges in the coming year. In contrast to previous years, the presentation lacked hard numbers.
